Pocahontas standing on the cliff, waving goodbye to the love of her life as they leave the island couldn’t be further from the truth of the story. In fact, the very ending of the film suggests that maybe the critics are right. The story of Pocahontas is a perfect representation of the struggles Indigenous American history faces. Native American history has always been difficult to study and is usually recorded from the settlers’ perspective. Thanks to Disney’s Pocahontas (1995), people around the world know the story of some of the first settlers in America and the feud that ensued between the Native American Powhatan people and the settlers.
